چکیده

We show that our Universe may be inomogeneous on large sub-horizon scales without us being able to realise it. We assume that a network of domain walls permeates the universe dividing it in domains with slightly different vacuum energy densities. We require that the energy scale of the phase transition which produced the domain walls is sufficiently low so that the walls have a negligible effect on structure formation. Nevertheless, the different vacuum densities of different domains will lead to different values of the cosmological parameters Ω Λ , Ω m and h, in each patch thus affecting the growth of cosmological perturbations at recent times. Hence, if our local patch of the universe (with uniform vacuum density) is big enough – which is likely to happen given that we should have on average about one domain per horizon volume – we might not notice these large-scale inomogeneities. This happens because in order to see a patch with a different vacuum density one may have to look back at a time when the universe was still very homogeneous.

The Evolution of Non-linear Sub-horizon Scale Entropy Fluctuations in the Early Universe

We examine the damping of non-linear sub-horizon scale entropy fluctuations in early epochs of the universe (T ≈ 100 GeV to T ≈ 1 keV) by neutrino, baryon, and photon induced dissipative processes. Results of numerical evolution calculations are presented for broad ranges of initial fluctuation amplitudes and length scales. These calculations include a detailed treatment of neutrino inflation, ...

6 Fractional Brane State in the Early Universe

In the early Universe matter was crushed to high densities, in a manner similar to that encountered in gravitational collapse to black holes. String theory suggests that the large entropy of black holes can be understood in terms of fractional branes and antibranes. We assume a similar physics for the matter in the early Universe, taking a toroidal compactification and letting branes wrap aroun...

Remarks on Inflation

It has been shown that sub-Planckian models of inflation require initial homogeneity on super-Hubble scales under certain commonly held assumptions. Here I remark on the possible implications of this result for inflationary cosmology. The observed homogeneity of the universe on superhorizon scales can be explained if there was a period of accelerated expansion (inflation) in the early universe ...

Cosmologically motivated theories that explain small acceleration rate of the Universe via modification of gravity at very large, horizon or super-horizon distances, can be tested by precision gravitational measurements at much shorter scales, such as the Earth-Moon distance. Contrary to the naive expectation the predicted corrections to the Einsteinian metric near gravitating sources are so si...
